Common Signs Your Skylight Needs a Repair or Replacement

Take a visual look at your skylight, does it look a little worn down or out of date? Here are some common signs that your skylight needs a repair or replacement.

- Water stains at the top of the tunnel. This is the start of a leak.

- Water stains at a pot light or fire alarm in the vicinity of the skylight. (water travels the path of least resistance. We see this happen all the time.)

- Foggy glass - Skylights are supposed to be clear, if they are foggy then the seals are broken and the unit is about to leak.

- Deck mount skylights have an interior wood trim at the top of the tunnel, if this wood is black or has mold on it its time to replace your skylight. This is a leak.

- Older Skylights - Most units last 20-25 years. Get a pro to look at the unit if it's older. (We change our tires when they become bald so change your skylight before it starts to leak.) This could save you alot of repair costs in the future.

- Cracks. Yes, dome skylights will start to crack as the acrylic breaks down from the suns UV rays. Replace before it's too late. (Water will get into those cracks and expand them during the winter)
