Curb Mount Skylights: Durable and Customizable
A curb mount skylight is a traditional style that features a raised wooden frame known as a "curb" that sits about 5.5 inches above the roof. This curb acts as the structural support for the skylight and provides several benefits:
Custom Sizes: Curb mount skylights can be manufactured in custom sizes, making them versatile for a variety of home configurations.
Superior Condensation Protection: With larger condensation gaskets, curb mount skylights are ideal for areas with high humidity or condensation issues, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
Long-lasting and Secure: The curb is sealed to the roof using high-quality materials, including fasteners, high-grade ice and water membrane, VELUX flashing kit, and new surrounding shingles. Once sealed, the VELUX skylight is placed on top and fastened securely to create a complete, water-tight seal.
Replacement Option: The curb mount style is one of the most popular choices for skylight replacements due to its durability and effectiveness in almost any residential setup.
Deck Mount Skylights: Sleek and Efficient
A deck mount skylight is typically used for new skylight installations or when replacing an existing VELUX deck mount skylight. Deck mount skylights have a lower profile and sit about 3.5 inches above the roof. These skylights are often favored for their sleek, modern look and functionality.
Built-in Wooden Base: Deck mount skylights feature a built-in wooden base with a metal frame and glass already attached. This makes installation quicker and easier.
Effective Seal: Like the curb mount, a deck mount skylight is sealed to the roof with fasteners, high-grade ice and water membrane, new shingles, and a VELUX flashing kit to ensure a secure, water-tight seal.
Not Ideal for All Replacements: It’s important to note that replacing an old curb mount skylight with a new deck mount skylight may not always be possible due to the specific drywall channel requirements. The deck mount skylight includes a built-in 1/2 inch drywall channel, which must be installed correctly to prevent condensation issues. Without proper installation of drywall or trim blocking, condensation can become a problem.
